Sales of vapes to minors illegal from tomorrow

Sales of nicotine-inhaling products, commonly known as vapes, to children under 18 is illegal from tomorrow, writes Brian Byrne.

The measure is the first element of the Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Act to be implemented, and the new offence carries a penalty of a fine of up to €4,000 and up to a six-month term of imprisonment.

Other elements of the Act to be introduced next year include measures around advertising, a licensing system and control of vending machines.

The introduction of the ban has been welcomed by local Fianna Fail Senator Fiona O'Loughlin.
