Family Walk event tomorrow on new Athy Distributor Road

A 5K Family Walk is planned for tomorrow, Monday, in advance of the official opening of the new Athy Distributor Road.
Arrival time for the event is from 9.30pm, with parking and meeting point in Athy Rugby Club grounds, and the walk will start at 10.30am. The morning will include music, a kite-flying workshop and an opportunity to explore new walking routes in Athy.
The event is organised by the Kildare Sports Partnership in association with Kildare County Council and developers BAM. The road will open to traffic at 7pm on Tuesday 31 October.
First suggested in 1978, the new road is a 3.4km road that commences east of Athy and provides a southern bypass of the town. The scheme includes 4.8km of combined walking and cycling infrastructure including a repurposed railway bridge over the River Barrow, two new roundabouts, new signalised junctions and a bridge over the River Barrow and a new bridge over the Dublin to Waterford railway line.
The scheme also provides a new link to the train station and to the area north of the Castledermot Road roundabout.
