Lost Lear for Riverbank debut
A production of Lost Lear by Dan Colley at Riverbank Arts Centre will kick off a new national tour this autumn, writes Brian Byrne. The play is a (very) loose adaptation of King Lear, and will be performed on Friday 20 October, with an 8pm start.
This remix of Shakespeare's play is told from the point of view of Joy, a person with dementia, who is living in an old memory of rehearsing King Lear and whose delicately maintained reality is upended by the arrival of her estranged son who, being cast as Cordelia, must find a way to speak his piece from within the limited role he's given.
The cast are Venetia Bowe, Peter Daly, Manus Halligan, Em Ormonde, and Clodagh O’Farrell and the presentation uses puppetry, projection, and live video effects, to probe the layers of Joy's past and present, fiction and reality, overlap and distort.
The production is co-produced by Mermaid Arts Centre and Riverbank Arts Centre, funded by the Arts Council of Ireland and supported by Fishamble’s New Play Clinic.
Tickets are priced €18/€16 and can be booked through the Box Office, either in person or by telephone on 045 448327 Monday to Friday 9.30am-5pm (closed for lunch 2-2.30) and Saturday 10am-1pm. Tickets can also be booked 24/7 on www.riverbank.ie – Online tickets subject to €1 booking fee per ticket.
