Feast of events kick off Heritage Week 2023
In addition to a heritage talk today on the history and development of the Valley in Kilcullen, part of the Fairy Trail Relaunch, there's a swathe of interesting events across County Kildare for the opening day of National Heritage Week, writes Brian Byrne. The links here are just a small selection.
If you're in the south county, two children's events in Athy town's Library should be fun, Magic Wand Pencil Crafts and Finger Puppet Crafts with Tamzen Lundy, at 11.30am and 2pm respectively. For those interested in history, a tour of Medieval Castledermot sets out at 11am from St James's Church, and a Bird Walk in Mullaghreelan Wood, near Kilkea, will suit families and begin at 10.30am.
Here in mid-county there's a Seed Saving and Sustainable Gardening course in Naas Men's Shed from 10am (though it may be booked out), a sunset Bats About Newbridge event beginning at 8.45pm at the Watering Gates on the Linear Park, and a family friendly history, storytelling, music and art event in the Old Schoolhouse at Staplestown from 11am.
A Guided Walking Tour of Kildare Town sets out from the Square at 11.30am and will be repeated on the 20th, while among exhibitions and events that are available through the week are Athy's Industrial Heritage In Post-Independence Ireland in Flood's Flooring and Furniture, visits to the Tower of Allen, Celebrating the Decade of Centenaries in The Curragh, daily Walking Tours of De Burgh Gardens in Naas, Cruises to the Leinster Aqueduct in Sallins, and A Look at the Coal Mining Industry in the 19th Century in the Steam Museum in Straffan.
Many more events are on, including in the north of the county outside the Diary's reader reach, all of which can be checked out through our spreadsheet of Kildare Heritage Week 2023 events, which tabulates them both by Town and by Date for easy browsing.
Enjoy a heritage-bingeing week, whatever your interest.
(And in Kilcullen, remember, the Fairy Trail Relaunch starts at 2pm.)
