CPC students 'walk for water'
As part of our Green School ‘water’ theme this year we organised a mini ‘walk for water’ on Friday 12th May, writes Michelle Flanagan. The walk celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people around the world living without access to safe water. It provides an opportunity for students to learn more about water related issues and sparks discussion about these issues.
In Ireland most of us have access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. Everyone in the world should have this access. The ‘walk for water’ raises awareness about women and children around the world who walk an average of 6km a day to access water and have to carry it on their way back.
Our mini ‘walk for water' symbolises this journey. On the mini ‘walk for water’ 1st year students walked a 3km route and collected some water in a bucket from the spout along the way. 5th year prefects stewarded the event.
As well as the walk for water we are also fundraising to build a “well” for a developing world community so they don’t have to make this journey everyday and that they have access to safe water.
Thank you everyone who supported us especially the lovely man who stopped in traffic to sponsor us and the nice people having coffee at “The Hatch” who also sponsored us. We really appreciated the support and the lift those kind gestures gave us.
