New shopfronts improvement grant scheme

A 2023 grant scheme for business owners to improve and make age-friendly their shopfronts has been established by Kildare County Council, writes Brian Byrne.

The scheme allows for grants of up to €5,000 or €50pc of eligible costs of such improvements, which can be as simple as repainting a shop-front. For projects which include making a business premises easier for access by older people, the grant can be increased to 75pc of such costs.

The guidelines and application process can be accessed here, with a short video documenting the experiences of a number of businesses throughout the county which have previously availed of the scheme, including Murphy Design in Kilcullen. 

Local councillor Tracey O'Dwyer is encouraging Kilcullen businesses to apply. "Wouldn't it be great if we could work towards making Kilcullen an age-friendly, accessible town," she says. "Maybe this grant is a start."

The fund is open until 30 June, or until the allocated money is exhausted, which ever comes first.
