There was great support for the Tree Planting which took place at Halverstown on Saturday morning, writes Noel Clare. Members of Kilcullen Lions Club and Kilcullen Community Action planted about 800 plants — all native trees and hedging.
Species included Birch, Scots Pine, Alder, Oak, Spindle, Hazel and Rowan. The trees were donated by the charity Trees on the Land — a cross-border initiative working to establish young native trees across the 32 counties of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The planting is one of the initiatives suggested in KCA’s Biodiversity Action Plan and when the call was put out last autumn for interested landowners who might have space for a mini woodland, Lions Club member Matt Jennings came forward with an offer of a site on his land at Halverstown.
More than one million trees have been planted through this initiative since it started in 2013.
