Rugby opportunity for Kilcullen girls
A call out to Kilcullen girls is being made by Newbridge Rugby Club for its new Ladies rugby team, writes Brian Byrne.
The Ladies team was started up six weeks ago by Kilcullen businessman Paul Treacey and some other coaches in the club, whose pitches are at Rosetown in Athgarvan.
"We have 23 girls in the squad already and most of them have never played before," Paul told the Diary. "A lot of them are GAA players taking it up as more of a social sport for the winter. We are playing in the Div 5 Leinster League so it will be competitive, but all done by the end of February."
Paul says that only one of the squad is from Kilcullen so far, and that he'd like to see more girls from the town getting involved. "A lot of people don't realise that Newbridge Rugby Club started off as the Old Kilcullen RFC. It would be great to get some Kilcullen girls out playing or even just out training, meeting new friends and staying fit."
Any girls interested can call Paul on 086 2624073. Training sessions are held in Rosetown every Monday and Wednesday, 7.30pm-8.45pm. Players must be over 18 to join, with no upper limit. No experience is necessary, the club coaches will teach all the necessary skills.
