Is shopping local really local?
With the Cop 27 now closing up, this letter in yesterday's Irish Times from local climate and environmental activist Dr Liz Cullen makes a very logical point. Shopping 'local' does not always mean bringing home local.
The reality is that we have become used to having a wide range of produce available that's often out of season here, so the marketplace responds by bringing them in from abroad, and often cheaper because of large-scale production methods in their country of origin.
Are we prepared to sacrifice that convenience, and sometimes a cost-benefit, to support home producers? And to support climate change mitigation? That's a life and lifestyle balance question that in real daily life is hard to answer.
