The lack of one- and two-bed social housing units available in Kilcullen is a cause for 'grave concern' according to Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer, writes Brian Byrne.
She was commenting after receiving confirmation of how many people have listed Kilcullen as their preference area of choice on the Housing List. The current number, according to the figures provided, is 446.
Of these, 179 are looking for one-bed accommodation in Kilcullen and 188 need two-bed units. The numbers looking for three-bed and four-bed are 74 and five respectively. Of those on the list, 40 are applicants since before 2010.
The councillor says she hopes that some of the new local developments will help to ease the list, but the greater need for more one- and two-bed units is a growing trend replicated throughout the county. "I am working with many people hoping to be housed in the coming months but I have grave concerns about the lack of one- and two-bed units, particularly in the Kilcullen area," she says.
As of mid-summer, there were almost 6,500 households on the Housing List for County Kildare.
