Draft Kilcullen Design Statement reveal next month

A public consultation on the Draft Town Design Statement for Kilcullen is scheduled for Saturday 24 September, writes Brian Byrne.
The draft plan will be made available by consultants The Paul Hogarth Company, and members of the community will be able to offer comments and suggestions.
At the August meeting of Kilcullen Community Action, Ray Kelly said the initiative had been ‘dragging on’, in part due to covid, but this was an opportunity to come along and talk to those involved in developing the plan.
He emphasised that the Design Statement will not be legally binding, but it will be taken into account by Kildare County Council when looking at further development in Kilcullen. “Anyone wishing to develop in Kilcullen will be asked to look at it,” he added.
Eoin Houlihan said it is hoped that whatever development does go on ‘will be guided by it’. He added that Kilcullen people should take the time between now and the public display to walk around the town and ‘experience the space’. “That will help them come up with ideas to suggest for the plan."
Noel Clare said it was important that at least some elements of the Design Statement should be incorporated in the Kilcullen Local Area Plan and the County Development Plan.
Ray Kelly made the point that the Design Statement and the current proposals for the Market Square are two different initiatives, though both are being progressed through the same consultancy. “They’re separate, but the square development fits in with the overall Design Statement.”
