Highest temperature 10deg in moderate winds from the west. On this day in 1951 the Mother and Child plan for free medical services for women was given the thumbs down by the Catholic hierarchy in Ireland. 

The scheme's promoter, Health Minister Dr Noel Browne, resigned, and the scheme was abandoned two days later.
