Warning on continuation of Text Alert scheme

Text Alert Scheme in danger of closing.

The Kilcullen Garda District Text Alert system may come to an end if no volunteers come forward to run it, writes Brian Byrne.
That stark warning from the text alert committee  comes as they try to get new people to take part in a rota to hold the scheme's mobile phone.
The scheme has been in existence for ten years and has proved to be an invaluable tool in crime prevention in Kilcullen, Calverstown and Brannockstown.
The five volunteers who have run it for the past decade say they are no longer in a position to continue doing so.
There's no work involved by the phone holders, who simply relay Garda messages about crimes or suspicious activities to the phones of those availing of the service.
In addition to the Text Alert service, the group has also enabled the installation of carbon monoxide alarms and personal assisted alarms to those who need them, in conjunction with the local liaison officer Garda Jonathan Brien.
Anybody who is interested in volunteering can email communitytextalertscheme@gmail.com or contact Sabina Reddy, currently chairperson of the committee.
