Casual Trading proposals for Kilcullen, deadline this week

Casual Trading Licences may be issued for Kilcullen Market Square on Sundays if the Draft Casual Trading ByeLaws 2022 are passed by Kildare County Council, writes Brian Byrne.

Up to 15 spaces for trading would be available according to the indicative layout on the proposals, under public consultation until the end of this week.

Trading times would be between 10am-3pm under the proposals, which can be viewed in Kilcullen Community Library or accessed here. Under the proposals, extra trading days would be allowed around festival periods of Christmas week, Easter Week and St Patrick’s Day. Licences for trading would be issued by the Council under strict specified conditions, and would have to be renewed annually.

The indicative layout above does not take account of the proposed changes to the square under the current Kilcullen Public Realm public consultation.

A charter to hold fairs and markets in the square was granted in 1681, when that part of Kilcullen was officially in Carnalway. Fairs were held during each year on February 2, March 25, June 22, September 29, October 2, and December 8 until they finished in 1916 when the potato market trade collapsed.
