Canoe Club Ukraine fundraiser exceeds €10,500

The Kilcullen Canoe Club Paddle4Ukraine fundraiser for the Irish Red Cross Ukraine appeal has raised over €10,500 so far, writes Brian Byrne.

The event yesterday brought local, national and international support for the club's successful attempt to collectively emulate paddling the 981 kilometres length of the Dnipro River that flows through Ukraine. Members of other clubs, including Celbridge CC, Salmon Leap CC, and East Coast Sea Kayakers also provided support for the event.

In addition to relay paddles on the Kilcullen stretch of the river, there were group paddles from Carnalway to Kilcullen and from Kilcullen to Athgarvan. An online raffle as part of the event has now gone well beyond its initial €5,000 target and is 70pc towards a new target of €10,000.

The raffle is still open and the draw will be held next Saturday. A magnificent prize list includes hotel stays, restaurant vouchers, two Nespresso machines and lots more.

The club also held its Awards Day during the fundraiser.
