Special Joyce performance in Riverbank on Thursday
The Riverbank Arts Centre is presenting Falling Through the Universe, a staging based on James Joyce's The Dead by performer and Joyce interpreter Declan Gorman on Thursday night, 3 February, writes Brian Byrne.
The presentation based on the classic short story begins at 8pm, mixing memoir and the magic of theatre to bring it to life on the stage.
Gorman, a writer, performer, director, lecturer and storyteller, describes the story as 'an astonishing insight not only into one night at a quiet society supper and dance where all of Dublin life is assembled' but also into the mind of a middle-aged man confronted with a crisis of confidence and self-belief.
His performance explores a time in his own life when, as a young Irish emigrant in Germany, he borrowed an English language book from a library in Munich, which changed the course of his life. Gorman read James Joyce’s Dubliners over one evening. Forty years later, he walks onto a stage to recreate the magic of that night.
