More Biodiversity signs installed by KCA
Did you know that there are five distinct kinds of bats who hunt in Kilcullen's Valley area? writes Brian Byrne.
Or that Badger, Dormouse, Squirrels, Pine Marten and Pygmy Shrew are among at least 14 mammal species which might be found there? And that Little Egret, Mallard, Crayfish, Brown Trout and Mayfly Larva are other examples of a wide-ranging biodiversity on the Kilcullen Liffey, as well as some of these and no less than 29 plant species along Pinkeen Stream?
Well, if you didn't, there's no excuse for not knowing all of that and more in the future, now that the Biodiversity Signs in the Valley and at Pinkeen are all in place. Commissioned by Kilcullen Community Action with funding support from Kildare Leader and the County Kildare Heritage Office, these are part of the wider signage package in a KCA project which include the new Kilcullen town signs at the approach roads.
The initiative has been in train for a number of years, but is now almost complete, and should be when a new Tourist Information sign is erected near the Town Hall.
So get out there and start looking for, for instance, a Ramshorn Snail at Pinkeen. And show the community's appreciation with a little 'well done' the next time you meet a KCA volunteer or CE worker going quietly about their business on behalf of us all.
