Downtown Kilcullen could get multiple pedestrian crossings

Lights-controlled pedestrian crossings from just over the bridge and north of Jamesy's Cabs are proposed to increase pedestrian safety in the downtown Kilcullen area, writes Brian Byrne.

There will also be an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing across Main Street from Murphy Design under the plans, which have gone on public consultation under Kildare County Council's Part 8 process for the Kilcullen Market Square and public realm redevelopment.

Pedestrian crossings will also facilitate safe passage for those on foot across a redesigned road traffic exit from the square and Riverside Manor, and across the junction of Bentley's Lane at Woodbine Books.

Currently the only designated crossings of Kilcullen's Main Street are at the traffic lights on the Newbridge Road/New Abbey Road junction, and further south at the Daybreak convenience store. A crossing has been agreed for Hillcrest opposite Centra and is expected to be installed shortly.

The Market Square Public Realm plans are on view in Kildare County Council offices and online, until 9 March 2022. People have until 23 March to make submissions on the proposals which will then be reviewed for inclusion into a final plan. KCC's Chief Executive will have eight weeks to complete this and make a report to the Council, which in turn has a further six weeks to make a final decision.

NOTE: This is one of a series of details from the plan which the Diary will be publishing during the coming week.
