Climate action group begins biodiversity project

People in Kilcullen will be asked to keep a record of the plants and animals they come across in the coming months, as part of a project funded by the Community Foundation of Ireland, writes Brian Byrne.

This follows the receipt of a grant of €4,000 by the group, to support a biodiversity initiative in Kilcullen. 

On Friday last, members of the group toured areas of biodiversity interest in Kilcullen, including Pinkeen Stream and The Valley Liffey Walk, with ecologist Nuala Madigan. They identified native plant species including Rose Hip, Lesser Celandine, Oak, Nettle and Ivy, as well as invasive plant Winter Heliotrope.

A short newsletter has already been produced by Nuala Madigan about the initiative, outlining the results of last week's walkabout. A further newsletter will give details about how people in Kilcullen can become involved in the project.

According to Cliona Kelliher of the Kilcullen Community 4 Climate Action, this initiative is being carried out in tandem with the Kilcullen Biodiversity Action Plan prepared in 2021 by Kilcullen Community Action.
