Looking Back: Widening the bridge


We're obliged to PJ Lydon for providing these photographs from the early 1970s when the bridge was being widened.

Some interesting details in the one looking down towards McTernans include the Mothers Pride bread van. Jim Kelly's tailor shop is obscured by the parked lorry in front of the bank.

The view from the square shows the Hibernian Bank, later Bank of Ireland, which at that time didn't own the premises beside it — PJ thinks it was then Mel's Hairdressing Salon, and beside that was Martin Murphy's shop and the Murphy family residence.
