Petition to correct date on Donnelly's Hollow memorial

A petition to the Department of Defence to change the date of the Donnelly-Cooper fight on the monument at Donnelly's Hollow has been initiated, writes Brian Byrne.

The date recorded for the fight on the Dan Donnelly Monument is 13 December 1815 — the fight actually took place on 13 November 1815.

The petition has been set up by Mario Corrigan of Kildare Library Services, one of the county's most dedicated local historians. He says Donnelly's Hollow is a landmark spot on the Curragh Plains and arguably Dan Donnelly was Ireland's first true sporting hero.

"Let us honour him and that amazing victory by correcting a wrong," he says. "The date of the fight continues to be miscommunicated. It needs to be resolved."
