Sustainable Kildare climate action challenge

Some 300 businesses in County Kildare will be invited to take part in a climate action championship, in an initiative by Intel in Leixlip and County Kildare Chamber, writes Brian Byrne.

The championship is under the banner Sustainable Kildare, and will be carried out in phased groups over the next ten months.

Participating businesses and their staff will be encouraged to save as much CO2 emissions as possible over three weeks, by registering daily, eco-friendly activities and making small changes in their lifestyle. In all, 162 actions will be available, ranging from switching off unnecessary lights, taking shorter showers and using public transport in place of car journeys.

The first 75 companies will kick off the championship on 19 October. For every participating company, a number of trees will be planted in a Kildare location as a carbon legacy of the project.

Pictured at the launch of the project are Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar together with Martin Heydon, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Kildare South TD, Kildare Chamber Chief Executive Allan Shine and Intel’s External Relations Manager Lisa Harlow.
