It Says in The Bridge: October 2021

The latest Bridge leads off with the happy story of five years of Woodbine Books, which has become an iconic destination business in Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne. For Dawn Behan and her team, the time has gone by very quickly, yet it 'seems like we have been here forever'. Yes it does.

The story is just one of a number of local businesses featured in this issue, with the centre spread devoted to three more, the new Little Brew Cafe, the 10-years old Carve On, and the brand new Stina Flowers. All in all, there's a business buzz around the town, easing us out of the pandemic.

There's plenty of news, views and some new features in the October issue, among those latter the first of a series of food recipes from local eateries, beginning with a Toulouse Sausage treat from Armelle's Kitchen. We also have a new writer from CPC, Aideen Stein, who reports on the workshops which are keeping Transition Year students busy during their first term.

CPC also figures in a report on the four now-former students who achieved maximum marks in the Leaving Cert, for which they were made a presentation recently by a proud college. And there's been achievement too in Scoil Bhride, where Mae Cowper-Gray won a national first in the Texaco Children's Art Competition — we look at the family's artistic background.

From John Duffey we have an insight into a pre-social media era when 'influencers' were found on the shelves of libraries, and were people of real achievement rather than manufactured celebrity. Our other regulars include Mary Orford's musings on the old values of a bicycle, Sean Landers looking back on old Main Street, and Noel Clare's Out and Away travels to the Sliabh Blooms.

Julie O'Donoghue is the subject of 20 Questions, among them the answer to 'What is the one thing you'll never do again?'. And we have an on the street report on Patrick Berney's surprise 70th. In the schools pages, Scoil Bhride is digging potatoes, St Joseph's NS Student Council is off to a busy start, and Brannoxtown CNS has a new teacher to help with a very busy daily curriculum.

In sport we have an update from Crookstown Millview AC, a profile of the Larrie Birds Basketball team in the Community Centre, and a busy month of playing from St Bridget's Pitch & Putt.

Altogether, an almost post-pandemic Bridge. The best value local reading around, from the usual outlets.
