Council to seek funds for Kilcullen crochet heritage study
An application to fund a feasibility study to clarify if the making of Irish crochet lace was begun in Kilcullen is to be made to the Kildare Creative Ireland team, writes Brian Byrne.
This follows a joint motion by Cllrs Tracey O'Dwyer and Mark Stafford at the recent meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD.
The councillors heard that the County's Heritage Officer and Arts Officer will make the application, with a view to conducting the study in 2022.
The wife of a local Rector, Mrs Martha Roberts, began teaching the craft around the mid 1840s to women in Kilcullen, to try and alleviate the hardships of the Great Famine.
