Weatherday: A wonderful rapidity of decision

A part of Mount Usher Gardens.

A cloudy start with some sunny spells through the morning. Cloud will build again in the afternoon.

High up to 21deg in light to moderate southerly breezes.

On this day in 1846, the first train arrived at the newly-built railway station in Carlow. The branch line from the Dublin-Cork line had been built by Carlow-born engineer William Dargan, who built over 1,300km of railways all over Ireland, including the first one in 1834 from Dublin to Kingstown (today Dun Laoghaire).

Headline: One of the qualities attributed to William Dargan, by engineering colleague William le Fanu.
