Weatherday: 'Another martyr for old Ireland, Another murder for the crown'

Silver and gold at the Hunt Museum, Limerick.

A pleasant early morning will give way to cloud and spells of rain that will persist through most of the day. Occasional sunny spells in the afternoon between showers.

High of 17deg in light to moderate breezes from the south, veering westerly later.

On this day in 1920, the Restoration of Order in Ireland Act 1920 received Royal Assent, providing that all crimes punishable under the laws in Ireland could be brought before a court-martial. The first murder trial under the Act was of 18-year-old Dublin IRA member Kevin Barry, subsequently executed by hanging.
