Proceedings seeking a Judicial Review of the Bord Pleanala decision to allow a quarry at Racefield have now been initiated by the Ballyshannon Action Group, writes Brian Byrne.
The group will be represented in the proceedings by Aoife O’Connell of O’Connell & Clarke Solicitors, who specialises in planning and environmental law.
In a statement this morning, the group said they have been forced to take this step against an 'appalling decision' that could have been avoided. "This development, at this location is not only extremely poor planning, but also downright dangerous. This company is making millions exporting products to its ever-expanding market in the UK from their three quarries already in this area, and we are supposed to roll over and let this happen when they look for a fourth.”
Kilcullen-based broadcaster and horsewoman Tracy Piggot is the latest figure from the equine industry to join the campaign against the quarry, for which Kildare County Council refused permission. She says quarrying in such a large concentration, at multiple locations around Kilcullen, is 'jeopardising a centuries-old reputation' for the equine industry which has sustained jobs and families in the county for generations.
The Ballyshannon Action group is raising funds from donors to pay for the Judicial Review, via a GoFundMe page or deposit to Credit Union account IBAN: IE67KIRI99217910372756.
