Progress on Old Kilcullen survey

A preliminary meeting with archaeologists has taken place at Old Kilcullen in preparation for a geophysical survey of the former monastic area, writes Brian Byrne.

The survey, funded by Kildare County Council's Heritage department, is due to take place later this year as part of a broad look at the heritage of the area.

According to the County Heritage Officer Bridget Loughlin, the survey will be going to tender shortly — she will be engaging with the Old Kilcullen Area Community Association on the project.

Separately, Old Kilcullen will also be part of a Light Detecting and Ranging (LIDAR) survey of the Curragh area, with funds from the 2021 Community Monuments Grant scheme. This uses pulsed laser light to measure distances, and the survey information will be used to inform the Consultation Management Plan for the Curragh.

"We're hoping that each of these initiatives will tell us a little more about the past of the area," Bridget told the Diary.
