Weatherday: Crimean hero

One of the 120,000 trees in the JFK Memorial Park near New Ross.

It's looking like another good day once early mist and cloud burns away. Temperature up to 17deg in light wind from the north.

It's the summer solstice, with just over 17 hours of daylight.

On this day in 1854, 20 year-old Armagh-born ship's mate Charles Lucas threw a live Russian shell from the deck of a Royal Navy ship in the Crimean War. Three years later he will be the first recipient of a Victoria Cross award.
