'Nature responds if we care for it' - biodiversity talk

The concept that nature responds to human care for it was suggested at the recent online event hosted by Kilcullen Community 4 Climate Action, writes Brian Byrne.
Participant Mark Reid told those on the Zoom event that when he was recently counting swifts going in and out of their nests at Kilcullen's church, he felt that 'they were happy to have me there'.
He had volunteered to count the swifts in Kilcullen last year after making a conscious decision to encourage people to 'value what we have' in biodiversity. He noted that he had been trained in swift counting by Paddy Sheridan, who sadly passed away late last year.
On the recent counting experience, he said 'I think nature responds to us if we care for it'. "We all know about talking to plants ... I think also that when we look after our environment in a benevolent way, the environment responds back ... so raising consciousness about it is so important."
Mark spoke on the value of recording data for the National Biodiversity Centre. "It's an app, and if you see a bird or a butterfly, for instance, you note it. It's really important for them to have this data." Saying that these are small steps, 'it is something that I enjoy'.
The Biodiversity and Health discussion featured a talk by Dr Liz Cullen, and the complete event can be watched on Youtube here.
