There's a strong Kilcullen connection in a 'Walk to Stormont' protest march which began yesterday in Greencastle, Co Tyrone, writes Brian Byrne.
Marelle Fyffe (nee Byrne) is your editor's cousin, raised in Kilcullen (daughter of the late Tom and Carmel Byrne and sister of Dave Byrne and Catriona Byrne) and a founder member of the Cooperate Against Mining in Omagh (CAMIO) campaign to stop a major gold mining proposal in the Sperrin Mountains by Dalradian Gold Ltd.
The walk is over five stages and with supporters coming from Monaghan, Belfast, Armagh, Bangor, Derry, Donegal and Belfast, the marchers plan to hand in a letter of protest at Stormont at 5pm tomorrow (Sunday) evening.
In the group's picture above at the start, Marella is to the right of the banner, which indicates more than 37,000 people supporting the campaign from the Omagh area 'can't be ignored'. Marella is a longtime resident of Omagh, where she is a yoga teacher.
