A fantastic day out was enjoyed by nine TY students from Cross and Passion College, on Wednesday 19th May, when they took to the stage in the Moat Theatre, Naas, writes Glenda Groome, to perform 'The Grimm Tale of Cinderella' by Katie McCann.
The students have been rehearsing the play since late last year with their director Mary McLaughlin and did not let the schools closure stop them, turning instead to Zoom rehearsals when in-person classes were paused. The playwright Katie McCann joined them on one Zoom call to talk to the students about the craft of writing plays, and to be an online audience as the cast workshopped a number of scenes from the play.
Having wowed the author of the play with their acting skills, the cast were then delighted to be offered the opportunity to go a step further and perform the whole play together on the stage.
Covid-19 restrictions meant that the production could not be enjoyed 'live' by an audience, but the production was filmed and recorded to be enjoyed by all very soon. Meanwhile, the students got to experience the adrenaline rush of being under the spotlight with full costume and sets in place.
We are sincerely grateful to Celine Garvey (Manager) and Conor O’Connell (Technical Officer) in the Moat Theatre for their wonderful support in allowing us to offer the students this amazing experience while staying within Covid-19 public health regulations.
Despite masks, social distancing and hand sanitisers being the norm, the students came away delighted with what was a very successful and happy day.
