Don't post found dog pics on social media — rescue charity
A local animal rescue charity has appealed to people who find lost dogs not to post images or information on social media, because they are often being reclaimed by individuals not their owner, writes Brian Byrne.
The Kildare West Wicklow SPCA says 'many many' such postings result in dogs ending up in the wrong hands, and being sold on or used for breeding or worse.
The charity's advice is to take the dog to a vet to see if it is chipped, and if this doesn't bring the identity of an owner, then contact the Dog Warden service.
KWWSPCA emphasises that unclaimed dogs are NOT 'put to sleep', but are rehomed directly from the pound or moved to rescue agencies for rehoming.
The charity also reminds dog owners that having them chipped and providing identity details on a collar are both required by law.
