Weatherday: Death of a weatherman
A mix of showers and sunny spells today. More rain in the afternoon, heavy around teatime.
Highest temperature 8-9deg in light westerly breezes, then into another cold night.
On this day in 2001, weather forecaster Ted Sweeney died in his native Blacksod in Co Mayo. His hourly weather forecasts phoned to London in June 1944 were instrumental in holding back D-Day by 24 hours, thus averting a likely weather-induced catastrophe in the landings.
