On this day in 1726, Englishman Abraham Shackleton started a school at Ballitore, mainly for Quakers but also available to Protestant and Catholic children in the area. Pupils included parliamentarian Edmund Burke, and others came from as far away as Bordeaux, Jamaica and Norway to stay and study in the school.
