Looking Back: Kildare Officer Shot Dead; Held Up and Robbed Near Barracks by Armed Bandits

Lieut. Wogan-Browne, R.F.A., attached to the local barracks, was shot dead at 11.30 yesterday morning at Kildare by armed robbers.

It appears that the Lieutenant was returning from the National Bank with £500 to pay the men, when he had reached the corner of the Infirmary road, which is close to the military barracks, he was held up by two men, who jumped out of a motor car. It is stated that Lieut. Wogan-Browne resisted and was then shot dead by one of his assailants. The men then took the money and got into the motor-car.

The driver was "covered" with revolvers and compelled to drive as fast as he could as far as the Yellow Bog, about one and a half miles outside Kilcullen, where the men left the car after giving certain instructions. He returned to Kildare and reported the matter.

The R.I.C. and I.R.P. were informed and at once made efforts to trace the culprits. They are co-operating and scouring the entire district in motor-cars.
