CPC extension goes to tender today

An extension for Cross and Passion College is going to tender today, along with extension programmes for two other schools in Kildare South, writes Brian Byrne. The project will extend CPC's capacity to 1,000 students, including four Special Educational Needs classes.

Senator Fiona O'Loughlin says she has received confirmation on the projects from Education Minister Norma Foley. The others are works at the Patrician Post Primary School Newbridge, where accommodation will also be increased to 1,000 students including another four SEN classes, and a new 14-classroom school for St Mark's Special School in Newbridge.

Senator O'Loughlin said she is particularly pleased to welcome the SEN provisions in CPC and Patricians. "This is really good news for these children and their parents today. Mainstream education is the first option for most children with special needs, meaning an inclusive environment and a continuum of support from primary level."

Welcoming the news, Senator O'Loughlin cautioned that the extra second level provision will not satisfy all need for places in the Newbridge-Curragh-Kildare area. "The shortage of secondary school places in the area continues to be a massive issue facing families. Work continues on identifying a suitable site and I will continue to engage with the Minister on this."

Just over a week ago, local TD and Minister of State Martin Heydon said he had been pushing for expedited delivery of second level school places in the constituency.
