Water conservation appeal ahead of cold snap

An appeal by Irish Water for homes and businesses to conserve water has been made in advance of expected very cold weather, writes Brian Byrne.

The company says that after the last freeze there was a higher than normal level of burst pipes which impacted on water supply. They are asking that people and business owners check for leaks and have them dealt with.

Tom Cuddy, Head of Operations, Irish Water, said customers should check outside pipes in particular, and report leaks they see on the public network to IW. "Small efforts by everyone to conserve water wherever possible make a big difference overall and we would ask the public to only use what they need whilst continuing to adhere to public health advice on hand washing and hygiene regarding COVID-19."

Met Eireann has issued a Yellow Alert that Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be very cold with temperatures in low single figures by day and with sharp or severe frosts and icy patches at night. There will be showers of sleet or snow at times in eastern counties from Sunday evening onward. Hazardous conditions are expected on roads and paths
