Social housing to be energy upgraded

Forty-three units of social housing owned by Kildare County Council will be retrofitted for energy efficiency in 2021, writes Brian Byrne.

Funding of €1,152,766 has been allocated to the Council for the work, under the enhanced Energy Efficiency Retrofitting Programme for Social Housing scheme.

Welcoming the allocation, Minister of State Martin Heydon said the work will contribute to the creation of jobs in Kildare. "Retrofitting homes is a highly labour-intensive sector and can create high-quality, sustainable jobs in local communities ... and has the capacity to play an important role in our economic recovery.”

Across the country, the scheme aims to provide 'deep retrofit' upgrading on 2,400 social homes this year, at a cost of €45m.
