A round of public consultations on the future of the Curragh Plans is to be initiated as part of a joint study with Kildare County Council to develop a conservation management plan for the area, writes Brian Byrne.

Government Minister Simon Coveney confirmed this tonight at a Fine Gael virtual meeting on Defence matters. The commitment was welcomed by Minister of State Martin Heydon, who said it will give Kildare people their say on the matter.

At the same meeting, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer raised her recent motion at Council seeking that the Curragh Plains be designated a National Heritage Area. "I was delighted to be able to do so," she said.  "The Minister confirmed that there are ongoing discussion between the Department of Defence and Kildare County Council."

The Minister told the meeting that the public consultations decision had only been agreed in recent days.
