Plan to explore Old Kilcullen architectural heritage

An application for funding to explore the archaeological heritage of the deserted medieval settlement at Old Kilcullen has been made to the Heritage Council Heritage Plan, writes Brian Byrne.

The application has been made by the County Kildare  Heritage Officer, with the support of the Old Kilcullen Community Association.

The community is also exploring with local landowners the possibility of reopening old roads in the area as part of an Old Kilcullen Heritage Trails project.

In response to a question by Cllr Rob Power at the recent meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD, officials said this project 'is still in the early stages', and when a clearer plan of the routes has been established, further funding may be required to develop or open the routes.
