Easter riot of colour for The Valley

One of the displays in the 2019 yarn-bombing.

The Valley Park is going to be a riot of colour over Easter thanks to the the members of the Suas Knitting Group, who are all busy preparing to 'yarn bomb' the area, writes Brian Byrne.

The initiative is supported by Kilcullen Community Action, with the idea that it would give a morale lift to the people of the town after a difficult winter of coronavirus restrictions.

Appropriately, the decorating will have an Easter theme, but organiser Maria Joyce is keeping the individual details under wraps until the display is in place. "We have a lot of ideas, and if they all come through, it will be really good," she told the Diary this afternoon.

For KCA, Antoinette Buckley says the organisation is trying to put a big effort into Easter this year because of Covid, and the yarn-bombing would be a terrific boost. There are also a number of other initiatives in planning to add more colour and interest in the downtown area. Easter bunnies are likely to figure strongly in some of the ideas, along with competitions and treats for children. There will be a launch of the programme by KCA in advance of the Easter period, which is early in April.

The yarn-bombing of the bridge bridge area for the June Bank Holiday in 2019, part of the Kilcullen 700 celebrations, was also by the Suas group. It was really colourful and very much appreciated. All the pictures can be seen here. "We have recycled a lot of the wool from that display for making the new one," Maria Joyce says.
