Cllr calls for councils to share border roads gritting

A call for a sharing by local authorities of gritting of roads on their borders is being made by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer, writes Brian Byrne.

The councillor has a motion to this effect on the agenda of next week's meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD.

She is asking that Kildare County Council engage with neighbouring councils to identify such border roads, which could be shared in the 2021/2022 gritting programme.

Speaking to the Diary recently, Cllr O'Dwyer said the process for having roads added to a winter gritting programme actually starts in mid-summer.

"That was one of the things I learned in my first year on the Council," she said. "Every road on a winter programme is strictly budgeted for. There's no excess on any road which can be 'dropped on the way'.

A sharing with other councils could increase the number of peripheral roads gritted during bad weather.
