Biodiversity Action Plan has long-term aims
There are almost 40 actions in the section of the Kilcullen Biodiversity Plan aimed at making the public spaces in the town more biodiversity friendly, writes Brian Byrne.
They include eradicating invasive species and replacing non-native shrubs and hedging with native species.
Managing wildflower meadows and verges is another key element of this section of the Plan, which is designed to run until 2025. It was launched last week in an online event along with specific plans for nine other communities in County Kildare.
The ‘biodiversity friendly’ section has individual actions for various areas in Kilcullen, such as the Valley Park, Pinkeen Stream, and green spaces in old and newer housing estates.
Another objective of the plan is to increase awareness of the value of biodiversity and understanding of the need to conserve it. It also has a section on supporting biodiversity education in the town’s schools, especially relating to pollinators, and with wildlife events and providing explanatory signage in appropriate places.
Workshops for local people, and interactions with business and industry to discuss biodiversity initiatives are other proposals.
The plan was devised with the help of Green Pine Consultants, who won the tender for the Kildare Community Biodiversity Project undertaken by Kildare County Council’s Heritage Department with funding from the Kildare Leader Partnership.
Kilcullen Community Action spearheaded the involvement of Kilcullen in the Project.
