On this day in 1840, Jozef De Veuster was born in Belgium. He would later, as Fr Damien, become the minister to a leprosy colony in Hawaii, tending to the victims' spiritual and medical needs, finally succumbing to the disease himself in 1889. He was canonised a saint in 2009.
