"We're ready for it, have been for a long time" — reaction to pub opening news

Local publican Tommy Dignam has welcomed the news today that all pubs will be allowed to open on Monday week, 21 September, writes Brian Byrne.

"It's a big relief, and we're ready for it," the operator of The Spout told the Diary this afternoon. "We have been ready for it for a long time."

He said that all staff have received their Covid-19 training and their certificates, and the furniture has been moved to ensure a 2-metre distance between tables can be maintained. "We have our signs, and sanitising stations set up, and we'll be ready to welcome our customers back. We're looking forward to it, and we can focus on work again."

He said he and his colleagues were expecting the announcement, following local protests yesterday outside TDs' offices in Newbridge and Naas.

"We had hoped it might be next Monday, and we had been working out a way to open next week anyhow, but now we'll hold off and open as the pub we know."

At the beginning of August, Tommy made it very plain that he considered the Government had 'split the pub industry' over the reopening policies so far.
