Update on coronavirus and Kilcullen

Kilcullen is one of the electoral districts in Kildare where coronavirus infection has been notified in the 14 days up to 17 August, writes Brian Byrne.

This is clear from a map provided to Deputy Martin Hayden today when he requested the data used by NPHET to recommend the extension of the current restrictions for County Kildare.

Although the information didn't give figures for each ED, according to Ireland's COVID19 Data Hub there have been 11 notified cases of infection in Kilcullen in total up to 12 August. This was one more than in mid-July.

According to the Data Hub figures, the infection rate by population in Kilcullen is a third of that in Newbridge, and a quarter of that in Naas and Kildare town.

Meanwhile, in a meeting this evening between Kildare public representatives, the Department of the Taoiseach, the Minister for Health, acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Glynn and acting CE Mr Joe Boland of KCC the CMO confirmed that the measures in Kildare are working but further restrictions are needed to continue to suppress community transmissions.

Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer asked for the rationale behind the reopening of schools in a county that is under restrictions and the CMO explained that schools can open when community transmissions are low which they are in Kildare. "The CMO also said he would make a video later this evening specifically for Kildare hopefully addressing our queries in relation to schools," she says.
