Encouraging start to the new Kilcullen Saturday Market

Wood turner Justin Dunne discusses crafts with Duncan Stewart.
A very good turnout for Kilcullen's first market in the Community Centre bodes well for the development of a regular Saturday morning event, writes Brian Byrne.

It was officially opened by Eco Eye presenter Duncan Stewart, through the good offices of his aunt Maureen Stewart, a former teacher at Cross and Passion College.

He said such markets were very important to every community for many reasons, including sustainable food production and local economies, and as a place where people can meet socially. "They can be the heart of a community," he told the Diary.

We'll have some words later from Duncan Stewart on the value of such markets, but in the meantime some of the Diary's pictures will give you a flavour of the event.  (All the Diary's pictures from the event are here.)
