On this day in 1945, the German commanding officer in Berlin surrendered to the Soviets, ending the Battle of Berlin. The city would subsequently be divided between Soviet and Western allies. A wall built between East and West in 1961 was demolished in 1989 and in 1990 the city became a single entity again with the reunification of Germany.
