Red Cross 'comfort parcels' prepared in Kilcullen

Five hundred 'comfort parcels' were assembled in Kilcullen Community Centre today by members of the County Kildare Red Cross Community Support Unit, for distribution to people who are isolated at home during the coronavirus situation, writes Brian Byrne.

But in addition to providing tissues, snacks and other treats, the gift packs are also aimed at encouraging some of the recipients to leave their homes for short periods, by including light protection of face masks and gloves.

"A number of people out there are very afraid to leave their homes at the moment, for a variety of reasons," says Red Cross Community Support's PJ Fagan, the Kilcullen resident coordinating the initiative. "Some of them have been isolated for eight weeks now. We're trying to help them to go out a little, telling them it is safe to do so, and if they are concerned they have masks."

The Community Centre made its upstairs Connolly Room available for assembling the packs, which will be distributed by the network of volunteers and community gardai which has been established through the county since the restrictions were introduced.

"It's also to remind the people that we're all still there for them at this point, in almost a 'family' of helpers in the network. Through the County Council, we now have a fantastic movement going, with very committed helpers."

Last week, the Red Cross group provided packs to families, which included items specifically for children.

"We're also coming across pockets of poverty during the distribution, which are being dealt with on a case by case basis," PJ Fagan said.
